Nottingham trolleybus No. 578 is one of 102 vehicles originally built for Nottingham’s extensive trolleybus network, although only the first 25 were constructed to the wider 8ft specification. No. 578 was built to the narrower 7ft 6in width and, like the three preserved 6-wheeler Nottingham trolleybuses, featured English Electric electrical equipment. Sadly no MetroVic or Crompton Parkinson power trolleybuses survived. Withdrawn from service in October 1965, the vehicle was purchased in January 1966 by Alan Calderbank for £155, with an additional £12 paid for slave tyres. It later moved to Plumtree where it was stored for a short period of time and then onto Sandtoft in 1974 under the care of the East Midland Transport Society. During preservation, Phil Howard played a key role in the vehicle’s history, with major restorations carried out in 1970 and again in 1977. Today, in 2022 condition, No. 578 remains an important survivor of Nottingham’s trolleybus era and continues to operate as part of our collection.
