No.143 is one of Blackpool Corporation’s 42 ‘Standard’ cars, constructed in 1924 to help modernise and standardise the town’s expanding tram fleet. Built as an open-balcony, unvestibuled double-deck car, it was later rebuilt in December 1929 with enclosed driver’s vestibules and an enclosed upper deck, and the original red and cream livery was replaced by green in June 1934. Withdrawn from passenger service in October 1957, the tram entered a highly unusual second career as an engineering vehicle, being fitted with a bus engine and generator to allow off-wire operation and carrying an inspection tower on the upper deck; it was subsequently renumbered 753 in the works fleet. After a serious engine fire in June 1990 gutted the lower saloon, the car was retained for possible restoration but was eventually donated to the Lancashire Transport Trust in 2002 to prevent its scrapping. A major project to return the tram to its original 1924 open-platform condition began in 2005, and following a revised partnership with Blackpool Transport, the restoration was completed in 2019 with the car relaunched in immaculate condition on 23 September that year.
